About

It's unusual for a modern work to become a classic so quickly, but Tolkien's "ring" stories, which began with The Hobbit, clearly are in this very special category. They stir the imagination and intellect of everyone they touch. Bilbo Baggins, one of the most conservative of all Hobbits, is approached by thirteen gnarled dwarves and one peculiar wizard and asked to leave his large, roomy and very dry home in the ground in order to go on a quest.  Encountering elves, goblins, trolls, wolves, eagles, spiders, and one very ill-humored dragon, Bilbo begins to discover in himself a love for adventure and passion for life that he never knew existed.

The Experimental Theatre Ensemble, a student-based production company operating within the COS Theatre Department, presents Tolkien’s classic like its never been seen before!  In an unprecedented display of ambition and creativity, the 23 members of the cast and crew, under the mentorship of Chris Mangels and Nick Terry, are already developing a production which will be COMPLETELY hand-made.  Over an intense eight-month production schedule the students are developing, designing, and building every single mask, costume, set-piece, puppet, and special effect – as well as composing an entire musical score – in preparation for opening night.  This will be an unforgettable evening of theatrical spectacle sure to charm the child in every one of us!
